NBA Finals or bust for Scott Brooks' mom

As coach Scott Brooks and the Oklahoma City Thunder await the winner of the Eastern Conference finals, his mom is making NBA game travel plans for the first time since 1994.

That was the last time Lee Brooks, 79, traveled to see her son play professionally, when he was with the Houston Rockets. Only if they made the game's greatest stage would she come to watch. As he describes it: "Finals or bust."

"She's always been that way," says Brooks, 46, the youngest of her seven children. "She's tough as nails. If I had her toughness I would've been a starter in the NBA."

Brooks played 10 seasons, winning a championship with the Rockets in '94. When Brooks became a coach, his mom gave him the same promise. Now that the Thunder have reached the Finals in his fourth season, he's cashing in.

"My mother's always been a big part of my life," Brooks says. "She's coming out for Game 1, so that's going to be a great time in my family's life. It's nice to have her around. It's a great opportunity to reflect on what we've done and who helped us. You don't get to this position by yourself."

Although his mother is reluctant, she'll fly from her home in Lathrop, Calif., about 70 miles east of San Francisco, to Oklahoma City, a three-hour nonstop flight.

"I thought we were going to have to send a limo to take her out there but she's flying," Brooks says.
