Taking a moment to inspect your home could save thousands ...

When you are thinking about improving your home value, CNN Money says there are some projects that should be given more priority than others.

While adding a new coat of paint to the exterior of your home or updating your kitchen cabinets and countertops can be aesthetically pleasing, the magazine says there are numerous projects to be completed that could cause significant damage to the rest of the structure if left unfixed.

According to the news source, this includes your electrical system. Not only can a faulty system disrupt your everyday life, but it can pose as a threat to your entire household if not addressed, as it can potentially cause fires or electrocution.

Hiring a professional to perform an inspection on your electrical system will cost you between $300 and $500 per visit. However, if you catch an issue in the early stages, it could save you from dealing with a hefty repair bill further down the road.

Meanwhile, the news source recommends keeping a careful eye on the foundation of your home. One of the key elements that could damage your foundation is water. With warmer weather approaching, you can prevent damage by cleaning away snow buildups from around the base of your home while making sure that drainage pipes are efficiently redirecting water away from the foundation.

However, if you suspect there may be issues with your foundation, you can normally hire a contractor to examine the structure free of charge. If the contractor recommends any significant repairs, they will often refer you to a home inspection engineer for a more thorough assessment.

Additionally, the roof over your head is an aspect of your home you want to be sure is in good working condition, advises CNN Money. If you suspect your roof is leaking, it could be result in a number of issues, such as insects, rot, electrical issues and mold.

Replacing an entire roof can cost the average homeowner between $5,000 and $15,000, says the source. So rather than refinancing your home loan to cover the bill, looking for early warning signs such as ceiling stains, missing shingles dampness or algae buildup could save you thousands.

To prevent any further issues, it's recommended to trim tree branches away from your roof so water will be able to evaporate rapidly after a storm. In addition, if you notice any missing shingles, replace them as soon as possible to prevent the problem from escalating.????

There are many potential projects if you're interested in improving your home value. Refinancing your current home loan into a new FHA fixed-rate loan through Freedom Mortgage may allow you to free up money to make positive home renovations.
