New studies in Sweden have shown that eating even 50g of processed meat a day raises the likelihood of pancreatic cancer by 19 percent. That means that eating a sausage or two rashers of bacon a day (50g) could raise the chances of getting pancreatic cancer by up to 19 percent, a burger (100g) by up to 38 percent. For those eating 150g of processed meat a day the risks go up to 57%! It is therefore highly advisable to cut down on eating processed meat.
The research has been published in the British Journal of Cancer. Data from 11 studies was examined which includes 6,643 cases of pancreatic cancer. Eating red meat was found to increase the risk of pancreatic cancer in men to 29% but not in women. They said: ?Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that processed meat consumption is positively associated with pancreatic cancer risk. Red meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in men. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.?
Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at World Cancer Research Fund, commented on this latest research: ?Regardless of this latest research, we have already established a strong link between eating red and processed meat and your chances of developing bowel cancer, which is why WCRF [World Cancer Research Fund] recommends limiting intake of red meat to 500g cooked weight a week and avoiding processed meat altogether.?
Pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed too late because the symptoms aren?t very clear. According to The Guardian, only 5 percent of patients live past 5 years, making it an extremely dangerous cancer. The biggest contributor to pancreatic cancer is still smoking, which raises the likelihood to 74 percent.
