In middle of Tebowmania, the Patriots announce something about his old coach

McDaniels Rams announceI am trying to rid my head of Tim Tebow talk, but it?s difficult. Watching him find Demaryius Thomas for a ridiculous 80-yard touchdown to beat the Steelers on the first play of overtime here at Sports Authority Field to take a win 29-23 did that to me. But still, as far as the Patriots?

They finally announced that they?ve officially hired Josh McDaniels. He?ll be an offensive assistant, then become the offensive coordinator after Bill O?Brien leaves. No surprise, but at least it?s official.

Here is the release:

JOSH MCDANIELS JOINS THE PATRIOTS AS AN OFFENSIVE ASSISTANT

FOXBORO ? The New England Patriots announced today that Josh McDaniels has joined the team as an offensive assistant for the remainder of the 2011 season.

McDaniels worked with the New England from 2001 through 2008, including three seasons as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach from 2006 through the 2008 season.

McDaniels was in charge of the offense in 2007 when New England set all-time NFL records for points scored (589) and touchdowns (75) en route to an undefeated regular season.

McDaniels began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Nick Saban at Michigan State in 1999. After two seasons with the Spartans, he joined Bill Belichick?s staff in New England as a defensive coaching assistant who also assisted in the personnel department in 2001. He moved into the coaching capacity as an assistant in 2002 and after two seasons as a coaching assistant, McDaniels was named New England?s quarterbacks coach in 2004. The club promoted him to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on Jan. 20, 2006.

During his three years (2006-08) as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, McDaniels directed a New England offense that led the NFL in points per game (28.8) while ranking second in the league in yards per game (370.8).

McDaniels left New England to become head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009. He served as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams last season.

A native of Barberton, Ohio, McDaniels played wide receiver at John Carroll University from 1995 through 1998.
