LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? After Louisville scored the game's first 16 points, Murray State coach Rob Cross said his team did the one thing they couldn't afford to do: play scared.
Monique Reid scored 18 points, Shawnta' Dyer and Shoni Mitchell added 14 each, and the 10th-ranked Cardinals cruised to a 105-62 win over the Racers on Tuesday night.
"The disappointing things is we came out scared," Cross said. "When you step up in competition against a team like Louisville in the Big East you can't play scared."
Murray State missed its first nine shots and started the game 1 for 18 from the floor before Mariah Robinson's 3 cut the deficit to 20-5 with 12:23 left in the first half. Louisville held the Racers to 17.9-percent shooting (7 of 39) in the first half.
"We didn't make any shots. When we attacked we changed every shot we took, we'd double pump. Then we weren't able to get our defense set," he said.
The slow start took away what Cross said was the only approach his team had to knocking off the Cardinals.
"The only chance we had was to come in here and hit about 20 3s and play fast and then get our defense set."
Five Cardinals players reached double figures and all 12 who played scored. Louisville's 105 points eclipsed its previous season high of 86 set last Saturday at Florida A&M.
Robinson scored 22 points, including 5 for 9 on 3s, to lead the Racers (2-5). Kayla Lowe scored added 13 points and Erica Burgess had 10.
Louisville senior guard Becky Burke scored eight of the Cardinals' first 10 points, capped by a 3 from the right corner with 16:54 to play. Cross then called a timeout and pulled all five starters for the second time in the game's opening minutes.
"That's one of the things we've been concentrating on, coming out strong from the jump," Burke said.
Antonia Slaughter's putback with 6:34 left to play in the first half pushed Louisville's lead to 34-7, and the Cardinals led 50-18 at halftime.
After Robinson opened the second half with her second 3, Louisville scored the next 12 points to take a 62-21 lead with 15:33 left. Robinson's 19 points in the second half helped the Racers cut the lead to 33 with just more than four minutes remaining before Louisville finished the game on a 17-7 run.
The final margin matched Louisville's largest lead.
Murray State finished its road trip 0-4, losing the finale in its first matchup against a ranked opponent since the 2008-09 season.
The Racers will next host Saint Louis on Dec. 3 in their only December home game. Murray State lost on the Billikens' home court, 59-49 last Saturday.
