The Gouldian Finches are native to Australia. People around the world desired this brightly colored bird after its discovery in 1844. From that point until 1959, thousands of these birds were distributed around the world. Today the descendants of those original birds are still being bred in captivity. The distinctive colors of the Rainbow Finch or Gouldian Finch make them desired by people everywhere.
Gouldian Finches, which are also known as Gould?s Finch or Rainbow Finches, are known more for their colorful plumage then for any other reason. Both the male and the female of this species are brightly colored with red, black, yellow, and green markings. Thanks to domestic breeding, there are new variants of this colorization available on the market. Some of these new mutations are blue, silver, and white.
Like many birds, Gouldian Finches are primarily herbivores. In fact, studies have shown no indication that they eat insects. Various types of grass seed or millet are their preferred diet. When kept in captivity, they need their diet supplemented with vitamins. One variant of the Gouldian Finch cannot produce their own vitamin A so they especially need vitamin supplements to stay healthy.
When being kept as a pet there are a few things that these delicate creatures need to ensure proper health. Fresh water and a high quality finch food are a given, but there are a few other things that might not normally be thought of. Grit or gravel, and cuttlebone are two necessities for these pets. Birds need these not only for the calcium, but also to help break down their food so that it can be fully digested.
A well-made cage is also something that any pet bird needs. The size of the cage depends mostly on the quantity of birds and their size. The more birds, or the larger the bird the larger the cage needs to be. While reptiles prefer smaller enclosures, finches are not going to complain about having more room to fly around in. No matter what size or type of cage is being used, it needs to be thoroughly cleaned at least once a month. This helps prevent illness in the birds.
While the Gouldian Finches are beautiful birds, this beauty has come with a high price. There are many of these feathered friends in captivity, but sadly, their numbers in the wild have decreased dramatically during the 20th century. Their bright feathers that make them loved by people have made them an easily spotted target for many predators. However, the main reason behind their declining population is fire. Fire has destroyed much of their natural habitat and has wreaked havoc on their population. There are recovery plans in place to help the wild population of the Gouldian Finch.
This is one time where human fascination has been good for a species. Thanks to the exporting of these wonderful pets, there is still a healthy population around the world in captivity. This means that even if the recovery plans fail, this wonderful bird will not be lost and there will still be the chance of having them flying wild in Australia again.
